How to Use the Roofing Dumpster Calculator
Our Utah roofing project estimator adds up the weight and volume for the debris and tells you the possibility of the roofing dumpster you may need. You will need to input the square footage of your roof, type of shingles, and number of layers.
Roofing Squares
Roofing companies and contractors use "squares" when bidding for roofing jobs. One square equals one hundred square feet. In order to find the area of a roof, do the following steps:
- Take measurements of length and width of each section of the roof.
- Use the formula to compute the area of each section: length × width = area.
- Add the area of each section together to find the total square footage.
- Divide the total square footage by 100.
Weight of Different Shingles
The shingles used for roofing each have different weights:
- 3-tab shingles: 250 lbs per square
- Architectural shingles: 350 lbs per square
- Premium asphalt shingles: 450 lbs per square
- Wood shingles: 600 lbs per square
- Slate shingles: 700 lbs per square
- Metal roofing: 120 lbs per square
Extra Weight of Additional Roofing Materials
You have to factor in the additional materials that contribute to the total debris weight.
- Underlayment/felt: ~20 lbs per square
- Decking replacement: ~150 lbs per square
- Flashing and trim: ~5-10 lbs per square
- Gutters: ~3 lbs per linear foot
Roofing Weight
Roofing materials are very heavy. In fact, even the smallest roofs can produce two to three tons of debris. Many houses in the state of Utah have multiple layers of shingles. Each additional layer of shingles increases the debris weight:
- Single layer of shingles. Only the base layer of shingles.
- Double layer of shingles: Weight of shingles increases by two times.
- Triple layer of shingles: Weight of shingles increases by three times.

Roofing Project Timeline
Plan your dumpster rental to coincide with your roofing project.
- Day 1: Dump some of your material in the dumpster as the roofing is removed.
- Days 2-3: Remove the roofing and the trash.
- Days 4-6: Installation of the new roof.
- Day 7: The house is cleaned and the dumpster is removed.
Where to Put the Dumpster
You can save time and energy on the Utah roofing project by placing the dumpster in the right spots.
- Position the dumpster as close to your house as safety allows.
- Avoid tree limbs and power lines.
- Wind direction should be taken into account when disposing of debris.
- If needed, protect the driveway with plywood.
